Nick Willis Praises PriddeyIsaiah Priddey from Hamilton Boys’ High School was the most dominant track athlete at the National Secondary Schools’ Track and Field championships in Timaru. He won the junior 3000m and later broke Daniel Hoy’s 2013 record in the 1500m. Priddey ran 3:57.19 which was 10 seconds faster than his nearest rival Max Spencer from Rathkeale College and eight seconds quicker than the senior winner, Guy Kilmister from Auckland Grammar School. Earlier in the year Priddey won the national junior cross country title. His rapid times have caught the attention of Nick Willis who has a message for Priddey. “It’s great to see you running so well at such a young age mate. Hope you enjoy all the sport has to offer and don’t put too much pressure on yourself too soon. I’m still improving at age 32, and still having fun!” On January 20, 2001, Willis ran the mile in a schoolboy record time of 4 minutes 1.33 seconds. That time is potentially reachable for Priddey when he is a Year 13 in two years time if he follows the progression of Wills and gets faster. Despite such a commanding victory Priddey ran with the strain of a headache and backed up from the 3000m a day earlier. “I was unsure how the 1500m would go because of the 3000m the day before. I was happy my training partners Sam Montgomerie and Connor Tristram both made the 1500m final because I could work off them,” Priddey concedes. Priddey had a simple strategy. “My strategy was to get out in front and push hard. I started a lot faster than usual. I think the hype of the event sort of impairs judgement. I wanted to start quickly, but I went out a bit too hard. It’s lucky I still had some petrol left in the tank,” Priddey reflects. Priddey previously ran under four minutes at an Auckland club night, but there wasn’t any indication he would repeat that effort leading into Nationals. Since winning the National Cross Country title in June times have been tough for Priddey. “There weren’t too many highlights after Cross Country Nationals. At the National Club Cross Country champs in Christchurch I ran a disappointing race and the same thing happened at the Australian Junior champs,” Priddey admits. The 3000m was a grueling race. Nick Moulai from St. Bede’s College had run a time of 8:40 and was a major threat for the title. Priddey describes the North Island versus South Island tussle. “My strategy was to sit on him for as long as I could and with the improved speed I have been working on, try to come home faster than him. It was a slow, hard race, but I passed Nick with about 450 metres to go so I had a long way to sprint which took its toll after the race,” he says. For the remainder of the season Priddey hopes to run faster times, all working towards the ISF World Cross Country Championships in April. Note: Daniel Hoy from Westlake BHS won a silver medal at the Junior Olympics in the triathlon last year. Just for a bit of fun, we have compared the school medal counts against the 2012 Olympics ... How did your school rank? Certainly this is a lot closer than the actual olympics... Perhaps this should be included for next years champs... Make Nationals a team event to get more of the top athletes along... thoughts?

Jumping For FreedomThe Vaha’akolo family named their son Freedom to symbolise their desire of raising a boy who expressed himself and took opportunities those less fortunate don’t receive.
Until recently the sentiment behind the name was being abused Freedom confesses. “I had some rough patches. I did some things I shouldn’t have done and moved schools. This year was my first regular year of full sport in high school, ” he says. Freedom was a member of the Auckland Grammar School First XV rugby team and later earned selection for the New Zealand Barbarians. In athletics he won his first National senior Secondary Schools triple jump title to go with the five Auckland and two North Island gold medals he had previously won. Freedom was the overwhelming favourite to win the triple jump and duly delivered leaping 13.95m which was well ahead of William Swan from James Hargest High School who jumped 13.81m. Freedom only took two of the available six jumps. “I went as hard as I could on the first jump and took the lead. A lot of jumpers like to take all six jumps in the hope of improving on their previous score. I like to save energy and jump only when I have to,” he says. Keen on athletics Freedom has been contacted to the Auckland Rugby Academy next year and will concentrate mostly on that sport. “I really like athletics because there is a special bond between the competitors. Training is lonely and we all understand that so when we get together it’s quite social. However it’s hard to balance both athletics and rugby and rugby is a big opportunity,” Freedom explains. Freedom in his first season of First XV rugby made the most of his chances. His quick feet and illusive running caught the attention of national selectors. His stunning try on Land Rover First XV rugby in the Grammar v King’s game was especially noteworthy. “I knew some of the history, but I didn’t realise how big the game was until I actually played in it. My first touch of the ball was a mistake so I was determined to make amends. I saw a hole and just went for it,” he says. Despite the 40-meter solo Grammar found themselves down 13-10 heading into the last minute. Against the head halfback Melino Fineanganofo dramatically stole the ball from the scrum and scored a try. Did Freedom honestly expect such an ending? “I always back our team to win as long as the clock is ticking, but that was a great play by Melino,” he says. Grammar lost twice to St. Kentigern College by three and two points respectfully to surrender the 1A title. “I wouldn’t have done anything differently. Those were close games between two good teams. They could have gone either way, but I guess that’s sport. I honestly thought my best game was the final,” Freedom stresses. Freedom was in fine form for the New Zealand Barbarians. He scored a try in the narrow defeat to the New Zealand Schools where the Barbarians made a strong point. “A couple of small mistakes cost us, but I honestly think we had a more united team and surprised New Zealand. For three days we were put in a camp with no cell phone reception. I think this brought us together because it forced us to socialise and show how much we wanted it,. You have to stay humble and alert all the time,” Freedom concludes. The girls’ sprints at last weekend’s NZSS Athletics Championships lived up to their billing as some of the most hotly contested events of the Timaru meet. Leah Belfield from Te Awamatu College did the Junior Girls’ 100m-200m double. The Senior Girls’ 100m was won by New Plymouth Girls’ High School’s Zoe Hobbs, defending her title, with Havelock North High School’s Georgia Hulls second and Tauranga Girls’ College’s Brooke Somerfield third. Marlborough Girls’ College’s Lucy Sheat took out the Senior Girls’ 200m final, in a strong field that also included Georgia, New Plymouth pair Zoe and defending champion Olivia Eaton and St Hilda’s Collegiate flyer Caitlyn George. Lucy was rapt with her win, in a new personal best time of 24.38 seconds. “It was great to win and I wasn’t expecting it,” she told College Sport Media this week. “You never know how it’s going to go, there are so many other athletes running very similar times and it just comes down to the day.” Also a 100m runner, Lucy explained her reasons to just concentrate on the 200m at Timaru. “I just thought to lighten my load up a bit. I didn’t have the best build-up, including getting the flu. So I thought it would be best to focus on the 200m and it paid off.” Lucy had three races. “I had a heat on Saturday and a semi-final and a final on Sunday. I won my heat and got second in my semi-final to 100m winner Zoe.” In the final she lined up in lane 4. “Zoe was on the inside of me in lane 3, Olivia was in lane 5 and Georgia in lane 6, so it was a good lane to be in with the others all around me.” Lucy has just finished Year 11, so she still has two years to go in the senior secondary school ranks. She’s got a busy summer of racing to look forward to now. “Coming up I have the Classic Series of meets, which is quite nice as I’ll be teaming up with Zoe, Georgia and Olivia in the New Zealand Junior Relay team. So that will be really nice to focus on that and try and qualify for the Junior 2016 Worlds [supposed to be in Russia]. It will be cool to run with my rivals in a team.” Earlier this year, Lucy travelled to Australia to the Junior Australian Championships in Sydney and got a pair of silvers in the 100m and 200m events – with Georgia claiming gold in both events. She then went to Samoa with the New Zealand team for the Youth Commonwealth Games and got fourth in both the 100m and 200m finals. In the 200m she dipped under the 24 second mark (23.99) for the first time, although this was wind assisted and didn’t count as a personal best. Lucy said she got into athletics through family. “My brother and sister used to do athletics and I went along with them and enjoyed it and discovered I could run fast.” Lucy was Marlborough Girls’ College’s Sportsperson of the Year for 2015. She also enjoys hockey, but this year had to put that on hold to concentrate on her running commitments. In the classroom, she had just finished NCEA Level 1 where her favoured subjects include chemistry and maths. She said her short-term goals are to train hard for the sprints and to see where the future takes her. Girls 3k Road Race Year 9
