St Kent’s, St Mary’s and St Margaret’s win netball titles

Saint Kentigern College, St Mary’s College and St Margaret’s College have won the respective Auckland, Wellington and Canterbury 2016 secondary schools netball titles that have all been decided this week. Below is a brief round-up of each of their wins.

Auckland
Saint Kentigern College are the 2016 Auckland champions, beating rivals Mount Albert Grammar School 40-35 in the final on Wednesday night.

In the 12th and final match of the regular season, St Kent’s completed an unbeaten year in the Auckland competition with this win over MAGS who had come into the decider with a record of nine wins from their previous 11 games. In the previous round-robin meeting between the two sides at the start of this month, St Kent’s had edged MAGS 37-36.

In the final, St Kent’s took an early four-goal lead and stayed in front throughout the match. But they had to fight for it all the way to the final whistle.

At the attacking end, St Kent’s were composted and accurate. Goal shoot shot 19/22 (86%) and goal attack Sydney Fraser was successful with 17/18 (94%).

St Kent’s finished their 2016 Auckland campaign having scored 542 goals and conceded 317. Epsom Girls’ Grammar School finished third and Westlake Girls ‘Grammar School fourth.

Winners St Kent’s, MAGS and other leading Auckland netball schools now turn their attention to the Upper North Island tournament during Winter Tournament Week next week in Papakura. In their pool, St Kent’s have Western Heights High School, Tauranga Girl’s College and St Paul’s Collegiate, who last week won the Hamilton City netball competition.


Wellington
Wellington’s St Mary’s College won the WelTec Regional competition on Finals night on Monday night.
Wellington city school St Mary’s defeated Lower Hutt ‘s Sacred Heart College 31-24 in the final, after these schools qualified one and two at the conclusion of the single round-robin regular season.

St Mary’s had won all seven games in the seven-match series by an average score of 45-19, while Sacred Heart’s only two defeats were to St Mary’s and another Hutt school, St Oran’s.

Queen Margaret College defeated Wellington East Girls’ College 26-19 in the playoff for third and fourth and St Oran’s defeated 2015 champions Wellington Girls’ College 34-33 in the fifth versus sixth place match.

Marsden Collegiate won Division 2 with a 27-19 win over Tawa in the final, while Wainuiomata High School beat Upper Hutt College 29-26 to claim Division 3.

The leading Wellington schools contest the Lower North Island tournament in Wanganui during Winter Tournament Week. The top five finishers from that tournament qualify for the NZSS Nationals ‘at home’ in Lower Hutt from 3-7 October.

Canterbury
St Margaret’s College continued their domination of the Canterbury competition, winning their sixth straight title on Wednesday night.

St Margaret’s beat Christchurch Girls’ High School 32-23 in the final.

The final was a thriller. CGHS pushed the champions hard early in the decider, and St Margaret’s pulled clear in the second quarter, before CGHS came back after halftime. Only a late flurry of goals decided the match for the winners.

St Andrew’s College beat Marian College 32-25 in the playoff for third and fourth.
 
Earlier in the winter St Margaret’s had won the first round SuperNet competition with a record of seven straight wins, scoring 246 goals and conceding 146 at the defensive end of the court.

CGHS finished sixth of the eight sides in the first round, with just three wins.

The eight teams then split into two sections of our teams in a three-match single round-robin series.
St Margaret’s and CGHS were both in Section 1, with the former winning all three games comfortably and beating CGHS 30-26 in the latter’s sole second round defeat.

St Andrew’s were more dominant than St Margaret’s in winning their three Section 2 games and topping that group, but were tripped up 28-27 by CGHS in last week’s semi-final.

St Margaret’s beat Marian College 33-26 in their semi-final.

South Island schools compete at the SISS Netball tournament in Nelson from 29 August – 1 September.
