Hurricanes U18 Squad Confirmed

PicturePhoto Credit - Dave Brownlie
Fifty-eight players have been selected to attend the 2017 Hurricanes Under-18s camp at Rathkeale College in Masterton.

The five-day training camp from July 9 to 13 will see the players coached by the current Hurricanes Investec Super Rugby coaching staff and professional players, but they will learn as much off the field as they do on it.

Hurricanes recruitment and development manager Darren Larsen said the camp took a holistic approach to educating the chosen players.

“It was incredibly tough to select the group from 293 nominations and we are very fortunate with the amount of talented players in the Hurricanes region.

“Our hope is that the young men who attend the camp will start to understand what is needed to become a professional rugby player and to enhance themselves as individuals.”

The camp will include guidance around nutrition, mental skills, physical preparation, media and leadership as well as performance planning, technical, tactical and positional coaching.

The week will culminate in a training match between the Coles XV and the Perenara XV whose coaching staff will include former All Black captain Rodney So’oialo and former New Zealand sevens star Tafai Ioasa.

At the conclusion of the camp 23 players will be chosen to play a one-off match against the Crusaders Under 18s as the curtain raiser to the Hurricanes v Crusaders Investec Super Rugby match at Westpac Stadium on July 15.

The 2017 training squad includes players from throughout the Hurricanes region with players from Hawke’s Bay (21), Wellington (14), Manawatu (11), Poverty Bay (6), Wanganui (3), Wairarapa Bush (3) as well as Horowhenua-Kapiti (1) and East Coast (1).

Fourteen schools and five clubs are represented in the training squad with Hastings Boys High School providing the most with 11 players.

Coaching staff from the Hurricanes three Mitre 10 Cup teams the Wellington Lions, Manawatu Turbos and Hawke’s Bay Magpies will be present at the camp, along with resource coaches from each of the club’s other partner unions and a number of first XV coaches.

“The theme for the camp is ‘up skill for all’,” Larsen said. “We want all of the people involved from within our region including our coaches, selectors, analysts, strength and conditioning coaches, and medical staff to gain something from the camp.”

Jockeying For Position In Central North Island

Picture
“We cared a lot about our unbeaten record. It hurt when we lost to Wesley. The boys were really down at Monday practice,” morns Jock Yarndley when reflecting on St. Paul’s Collegiate’s first loss in 29 games in the Central North Island (CNI) series recently.

St. Paul’s had a horror week where they lost seven front line players and had to play two matches in five days. On May 30, they were held to an 11-11 draw by Wanganui Collegiate before heading to Paerata where they were soundly beaten 29-13.

“Wesley was a real physical team and they got on top of us early. Their confidence grew and you can’t let that happen against Wesley.” Yarndley admits.

Since the Wesley setback, Chiefs Under-18 camp selections Sam Cooper (hooker), Luke Donaldson (halfback), Fergus Burke (first-five) and Valynce Crosby (midfield) have all returned to the roster. Unsurprisingly, results have improved with wins achieved against Feilding High School (26-15), Francis Douglas Memorial College (44-26) and Rathkeale College (59-7).

This Saturday on Land Rover First XV St. Paul’s hosts St. Peter’s Cambridge in a replay of the 2016 CNI final. St. Peter’s are at the top of the standings in 2017 with five wins in six games.

“It’s going to be a tough game, but I am really looking forward to it. From what I have seen St. Peter’s play a real direct game so we are going to have to make our tackles count,” Yarndley predicts.

St. Peter’s only loss was to Francis Douglas 38-21 in Round two. Yarndley believes that Francis Douglas provided a few clues on how to topple St. Peter’s.

“Francis Douglas opened St. Peter’s up. They are a quick team with good backs. We might look to move the ball a bit because we have pace out wide, but to do that it we have to win up front.”

Openside Yarndley is a key member of the St. Paul’s pack. Robust over the ball he has a happy knack of scoring tries and is approaching 50 games for the First XV.

“My favourite game for the First XV was the CNI final in Year 11. We got up 28-0 and never looked back. Last year’s final was another highlight. It was on TV and I had to mark Jacob Norris who is a really good player.”

Yarndley was “gutted” to miss selection for the Chiefs camp, but insists it’s no reflection on the CNI series which has seen nine of 23 games decided by 25 or more points.

“I think the competition is getting stronger. Last year we beat Wanganui by 90 or something and this year we had a draw. Teams vary in strength and each play’s differently, but it’s a good comp,” he said.

Yarndley’s father Scott is a horse farmer in Te Awamutu and can be seen regularly photographing St. Paul’s games. Jock is the middle of three children. Next year he hopes to acquire an apprenticeship in building or engineering while continuing rugby.

St. Paul’s Collegiate against St. Peter’s Cambridge kicks off at 2:30pm on the Rugby Channel.

The other matches in Round Five of the Central North Island competition this weekend:
#1 - Wanganui Collegiate v Lindisfarne

It takes Tooman to tango

Picture

For the first time the Kapiti College First XV is in Premier One of the Wellington Secondary Schools rugby competition. After being humiliated 97-7 by St. Pat’s Silverstream in Round One, Kapiti have won three games on the trot and caused a huge upset when they tipped over 2016 semi-finalists Rongotai College 19-15 last weekend.

A father and son duo, are coach and captain of the team. Hooker Liam Tooman has played over 50 games for the side while his father Mark coaches. Liam admits the pair rarely talks about anything other than rugby.
“Were not allowed to talk about rugby at the dinner table because mum banned it, but we talk about rugby on the way to school, at lunchtime and pretty much any opportunity we get.”

The frequent discussions have paid dividends. Kapiti have improved from Premier 2 semi-finalists in 2016 to a possible top four contender in the WelTec Premiership.

“We believe we can make the semis. We have a big game against St. Pat’s Town this Saturday, which is one were really targeting. Wellington College and Scots will be tough, but the remaining games we believe we can win.” Tooman enthuses.

How has Kapiti become a threat in the top echelon so quickly?

“It hasn’t happened overnight. Dad has been coaching a group of us since Year 9 and we’ve built a strong bond. We have four players who have played over 50 games for the First XV and two more will do so soon.” Tooman explains.

Kapiti was thumped 53-21 by Silverstream in the first round of grading and nearly had their Premiership ambitions thwarted by Aotea College, who they had beaten in the pre-season.

“We beat Aotea in a spiteful game by 15-10. There were calls going everywhere and it nearly got out of control. I think our two point loss to Tawa in the Prem two semis the year before spurred us on.” Tooman stresses.
Taita College was the last hurdle to conquer and were emphatically beaten 35-0.

Kapiti achieved their first win in Premier One against Tawa College 22-16 with Taine Hata scoring two tries, but Kapiti’s growing confidence and composure was best illustrated in the Rongotai match. Tooman scored the winning try from a lineout drive as the hosts outscored the visitors three tries to two.

Mark Tooman was surprised by Rongotai’s complacency. He was quoted in the Kapiti Observer as saying:
“There was a lot of banter that Rongotai were going to kill us. Look who is laughing now.”

On Saturday a Haki Te Hauora Mather penalty seven minutes from time enabled Kapiti to defeat Porirua College 36-33.

“Teachers who never talked to us now do now,” Tooman reveals.

“Were not getting too far ahead of ourselves, but we are proud of what we have achieved so far and hope to continue surprising others.” Tooman concludes.

Smashed em bro...

New Zealand: 64 (Asafo Aumua 3, Luke Jacobson 2, Dalton Papali’i, Pouri Rakete-Stones, Isaia Walker-Leawere, Josh McKay, Tom Christie; Stephen Perofeta 7 con) England:17 (Ben Earl, Alex Mitchell, Josh Bayliss tries; Max Mailns 1 con)

New Zealand has won the World Rugby Under-20 Championship for the sixth time demolishing England by a record 64-17 in the final.

New Zealand’s victory eclipsed the 62-17 triumph over Australia in 2010 and hooker Asafo Aumua emulated Telusa Veainu’s feat of scoring a hat-trick in the decider.

New Zealand’s power, pace and skill completely overwhelmed the 2016 winners who were down 40-7 at halftime.

New Zealand set the tone in the fourth minute when they pilfered a tight head inside the English 22. A succession of authoritative pick and goes followed and flanker Dalton Papali’i leaped over a ruck for the first try.

England frequently missed one on one tackles as New Zealand was able to ignite their offloading game. Prop Pouri Rakete-Stones powered over for a second try in the 10th minute.

England threatened a resurgence when flanker Ben Earl galloped away from a well-timed Max Mailns pass, but New Zealand was quick to reassume control.

In the 25th minute fullback Will Jordan went flying through filmsy defence, only to stumble short of the line. New Zealand swiftly sent the ball wide and Aumua bumped off the fullback to collect his first.

Three minutes later Jordan and Aumua combined again in a 50-metre surge and lock Isiah Walker-Leawere profited. Aumua blasted over again in the 38th minute and wing Caleb Clarke barrelled aside two defenders and overloaded on the ground to skipper Luke Jacobson to complete the first-half massacre.

Predictably New Zealand lacked the same verve in the second-half, but still produced some awe-inspiring rugby. Aumua had a hand in New Zealand’s seventh try when he burst 20-metres from a lineout and recycled promptly for flatmates Jordan and Josh McKay to finish an overlap.

The rampaging hooker then brought up the half century with a Lomu like run 10-meters from the English line. New Zealand played ten minutes with 14 men when prop Ezekiel Lindenmuth was yellow carded for a late tackle in the 46th minute.

New Zealand left plenty of points on the field. First-Five Stephen Perofeta missed five kicks and in the seventh minute bombed a try when he broke 70-metres swatting aside all three English front rowers, but failed to release to unmarked support.

In the 13th minute Jordan made a spectacular catch in traffic and broke to the English 22. From the next ruck Perofeta cross-kicked for Orbyn Ledger who dropped the ball with a clear run to the line. Nine minutes later a bullet pass by Enari to Tima Faingaanuku set the winger free who after a 20-metre dash fumbled perilously short of the chalk.

Perofeta, who played in the Blues recent victory over the British and Irish Lions, joined the squad in Georgia on Friday. Alex Mitchell from Taranaki has also joined the squad as a replacement for Ryan Coxon at prop.

Head Coach Craig Philpott said the team was looking forward to the final.

“Our young men are excited to add to the legacy of the Black Jersey and perform well in the World Cup Final.”

“Unfortunately, we have had to rule Tiaan out of the final due to concussion which was really disappointing for both him and our whole squad. Luckily we have an awesome replacement in Stephen who played for the Under 20s last year and brings a wealth of experience.

“The forwards selected have been rewarded for their consistent performances. Our scrum and lineout has been operating at close to 100 percent during the tournament so we need to reproduce that in the final."

Canterbury Rugby makes a bold statement - ‘Let Her Play’

Picture
The future of girls’ rugby in Canterbury is bright, with the launch of a new ‘Let Her Play’ campaign aimed at supporting the skill development of teenage girls in Canterbury.

On Friday 9 June, the Canterbury Rugby Union launched the program with the first session of a ‘Friday Nights Under Lights’ mini-series at Rugby Park. The series, which invites girls aged 13-16 to participate in training sessions, is focused on a combination of education, skill development and game time with the support of experienced coaches and former players.

CRFU Community Rugby Manager Emma Weenink said the ‘Let Her Play’ program was about opening doors and it was encouraging to see a number of young women of varying abilities joining the group: “It was exciting to welcome these girls into our high performance facilities which are normally reserved for professional male players, and have them learn new skills from world-class coaches and players.

“We recognise there are currently limited opportunities for teenage girls who wish to play rugby, but we’re hopeful that the ‘Let Her Play’ program will help us grow our registered players, so that we can establish a Saturday competition in 2018", Weenink said.

35 players are currently registered for the ‘Let Her Play’ program, with the remaining sessions to take place on 16th, 23rd and 30th June.  CRFU CEO Nathan Godfrey was quick to acknowledge the positive support the CRFU program has received from the likes of Crusaders Assistant Coach Brad Mooar and IHPU Manager John Haggart:  “This week, Canterbury Womens’ Assistant Coach and ex-Black Ferns player Mel Ruscoe is also investing time in the girls development", said Godfrey.

The launch of the ‘Let Her Play’ campaign coincides with the International Women’s Rugby Series currently underway in New Zealand. Rugby Park is hosting the Black Ferns, Australia, Canada and England today, in what is the first time international Womens’ rugby has been played in Christchurch for 20 years.
