SMC claim maiden 7's title ahead of Feilding

PictureSt Mary's College 7's - Photo Credit Tuga Mativa
The Sport and Rugby Institute at Massey University hosted the Sir Gordon Tietjens 7's over the last couple of days. Although the teams are predominately from the central North Island, there are a handful of top teams from other regions attending the event.

The most notable performance from this event, is the continued raise of St Mary's College (Wellington). After winning Division 2 (10's) in 2015, they progressed to Wellington 7's Champions, won the bowl at Condors, then today claimed their first significant trophy against the big names in girls 7's in NZ.

Feilding and Hamilton Girls' are significant leaders in the girls game in NZ, but it is exciting to see a relative new comer gaining top results. It will be great watching this squad and coaching team throughout the year.

Crusaders name development team to play Hurricanes U20

Picture
Crusader Knights (development team... a few over 20's as well!) will take on the Hurricanes U20 this Friday. But if their U18 clash result from last year is anything to go by, they may be put to the sword by the Hurricanes. The team is bolstered by a handful of out of Franchise signings, but it may still be a tough game for the local favourites.

Game to be played at Blenheim's Lansdowne Park on Friday, 3pm KO.

Crusaders Knights squad 2016:
Alex Nankivell (Lincoln University), Billy Harmon (New Brighton), Blair Prinsep (High School Old Boys), Brett Cameron (Lincoln University), Caleb Aperahama (Canterbury University), Caleb Makene (Lincoln University), Charlie Gamble (Marist Albion), Hamish Dalzell (Lincoln University), Harrison Groundwater (Lincoln University), Inga Finau (Linwood), Jack Stratton (Lincoln University), Jesse MacDonald (Central), Joel Hintz (Lincoln University), Jordie Barrett (Lincoln University), Josh McKay (Lincoln University), Logan Crowley (Lincoln University), Milford Keresoma (TBC), Nick Werahiko (Lincoln University), Nigel Gibb (Canterbury University), Pari Pari Parkinson (Stoke), Poasa Waqanibau (Sumner), Quinten Strange (Nelson), Sam Godwin (Canterbury University), Sean Paranihi (Sumner), Shannon Frizell (Nelson Marist), Tom Hill (Stoke) and Vernon Fredericks (Moutere).

Doping in South African sport is most common among rugby players under 21

Picture
This is according to recent surveys by the SA Institute for Drug-free Sport.

"The major shocker is that one pupil tested positive for seven anabolic steroids, another for three, one for two, one for a steroid and stimulant, and one for a steroid and cannabis," the institute's research manager, Amanda Claassen-Smithers, said yesterday.

The tests were of members of sporting federations and not scholars, she said at Fitcon 2016, a fitness convention organised by the Sport Science Institute of SA.

From April 2012 to March 2013 nine of 43 athletes who tested positive for doping were under 21, and eight of them played rugby.
