The Sport and Rugby Institute at Massey University hosted the Sir Gordon Tietjens 7's over the last couple of days. Although the teams are predominately from the central North Island, there are a handful of top teams from other regions attending the event. The most notable performance from this event, is the continued raise of St Mary's College (Wellington). After winning Division 2 (10's) in 2015, they progressed to Wellington 7's Champions, won the bowl at Condors, then today claimed their first significant trophy against the big names in girls 7's in NZ. Feilding and Hamilton Girls' are significant leaders in the girls game in NZ, but it is exciting to see a relative new comer gaining top results. It will be great watching this squad and coaching team throughout the year. But if their U18 clash result from last year is anything to go by, they may be put to the sword by the Hurricanes. The team is bolstered by a handful of out of Franchise signings, but it may still be a tough game for the local favourites. Game to be played at Blenheim's Lansdowne Park on Friday, 3pm KO. The Blues have named a squad of 28 under-20 players from around the region who will play for Blues Under 20 in two upcoming fixtures. The team will play the Chiefs Under 20 this Friday, 2pm at Pukekohe. The game will act as a curtain-raiser to the Chiefs v Blues pre-season match, which kicks off at 5.05pm. The team will also play the Hurricanes next Wednesday in Taupo. Blues High Performance Manager Tony Hanks called the Blues Under 20 team an “important part of our High Performance Strategy.” “The Under 20 team is a significant step in the pathway to professional rugby for young players. We’re committed to providing development and playing opportunities for players in the region.” “The Development programme has proved to be the springboard for a number of Blues players over the past two years, with 20 players from the development programme earning first-time Super Rugby contracts with the Blues.” The team is: Hamish Pomare - Northland Levi Clark - Northland Louis Ward - Northland O’Neal Rongo - Northland Sesimani Tupou - Northland Dylan Lam - North Harbour Hapakuki Moala-Liava’a - North Harbour Jack Bergin - North Harbour James Little - North Harbour Lewis Gjaltema - North Harbour Mark Telea - North Harbour Martin Brink - North Harbour Adrian Choat - Auckland Afioga Ielemia - Auckland Antonio Ripata - Auckland Charles Napa’a - Auckland Dalton Papali’i - Auckland Ezekiel Lindenmuth - Auckland Freedom Vaha’akolo - Auckland Jacob Pierce - Auckland Jerry Samania - Auckland Luke Cunis - Auckland Nikolai Foliaki - Auckland Romero Tagi - Auckland TJ Vaega - Auckland Toma Tia - Auckland Wesley Tamiefuna - Auckland Wiseguy Faiane - Auckland This is according to recent surveys by the SA Institute for Drug-free Sport. "The major shocker is that one pupil tested positive for seven anabolic steroids, another for three, one for two, one for a steroid and stimulant, and one for a steroid and cannabis," the institute's research manager, Amanda Claassen-Smithers, said yesterday. The tests were of members of sporting federations and not scholars, she said at Fitcon 2016, a fitness convention organised by the Sport Science Institute of SA. From April 2012 to March 2013 nine of 43 athletes who tested positive for doping were under 21, and eight of them played rugby.
