The recent final of the 2017 NZSSSC College Baseball Championship saw Botany Downs College retain their title in a thriller against Auckland Grammar School. Scores were tied 4-4 at the top of the 7th inning, before Harry Valk hit a one-out grand slam home run, which gave Botany Downs a winning 8-4 lead. Botany Downs had pipped Glendowie College 10-9 in their extra-inning semi-final encounter. Tuku Repia also capped off an outstanding tournament by claiming top pitcher, top hitter and tournament MVP honours. The Tournament team was: Tuku Repia and Huri Repia (Botany Downs), Correze Nepia and Alex Hill (Auckland Grammar), Henry Leabourn and Takumi Nagasako (Glendowie College), Jeffrey Fuatogi and Thomas Ryan (One Tree Hill College) and Doug Schwart and Sophie Hollings (St Kentigern College). Played in torrential rain, the finals were hard fought. The Open boys went down to the wire with a draw at full time resulting in both teams having to play off in a golden point. After pressing the Wesley line, the Manurewa High School team turned over possession and Wesley ran the length of the field to score the winning try. Manurewa High School won the Open Girls division. Teams from Papakura High School, Pukekohe High School, James Cook High School, Manurewa High School and Wesley College fielded teams. Paralympian Josh Taylor set meet records in all three of his gold medal-winning performances at the North Island secondary schools track and field championships last weekend. Taylor, 15, was the star act of a Wairarapa team that finished with five golds and two bronze medals and had the majority of its athletes claim top 10 placings. The fields in the para junior boys events may have been small but that didn’t deter from Taylor’s efforts as he set new marks in the 100m (27.92secs), 400m (1min 4.73secs) and discus (20.22m) and placed third in the long jump (3.39m) for good measure. But Otumoetai College student Olivia Cummings, 14, claimed a clean sweep of three titles at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Triathlon Championships held in Whanganui last week. The weather was average, the water quality in the river decidedly dubious after heavy rains but Olivia was oblivious to any distractions around her. She won the under-16 girls' individual triathlon and aquathlon titles before teaming up with Otumoetai College teammates Grace Blissett, Jade Stafford and Harry Lowe from Tauranga Boys' College to take out the under-16 tag team event.
