Included in the team was a group of three Howick College students, Francis Morrison, James Davison and Mason Lockhart. The trio were selected for the tour from the Touch Nationals in Christchurch in February. Francis Morrison was the tournament MVP from this team and said the tour was a hugely beneficial experience and that it was a proud moment for everyone to wear the silver fern and receive their gear. “It was a whole different atmosphere playing against Aussie teams,” added Francis. James Davison said that it was a “mean experience, with great team members to play with.” The team played several games in their eight days away, a highlight win being their 17-1 victory over the Southport High School U15 side, which was backed up their 10-9 win earlier that day over the Southport High School U18 team. Earlier in September, the New Zealand Boys and Girls U15 Touch teams also toured Queensland, playing against some of Australia’s best youth U16s and U18s teams. Despite being considerably younger, the teams played some great touch and also gained invaluable experience. The 2016 New Zealand Secondary school Touch Nationals are being played at Bruce Pulman Park in Auckland from 9-11 December. Touch is a growing sport at Howick College with the Senior mixed team just missing out on qualifying on Nationals this year. The senior girls team will go to nationals for the first time since 2011. Last year two girls made the NZ U15 Mixed team. Fourteen students at Howick played at Nationals for either Counties Manukau or Auckland. Howick College also has a blossoming Rugby Sevens programme. Their Girls U15s Sevens team won the Condors U15 tournament last December, and their Senior team, featuring many of these same players, recently won the Auckland Condors qualifying tournament. This year’s Condors Nationals are at Sacred Heart College in early December.

Ellesse Andrews riding a wave of successWhen College Sport Media caught up with cyclist Ellesse Andrews at the start of last year she was living in Wanaka and attending Mount Aspiring College and regularly commuting three hours each way to train and compete at the Invercargill velodrome.
At the start of this year Ellesse and her family moved north to Cambridge, where her father and former Commonwealth Games track cycling bronze medallist Jon Andrews started a new job as a high performance coach with Cycling New Zealand. The move to the Waikato sporting hotbed has made Ellesse’s training a lot easier, which she credits much towards the terrific year she’s had in 2016. “I go to St Peter’s School and the velodrome is literally across the road, so I can walk over after school to training and to whatever else I have on there,” Year 12 student Ellesse explained. “It’s also a three minute drive from my house, so it’s really handy.” “Just getting in that extra time on the track has made it really a difference to my racing and it’s really helped with my achievements this year. It’s also really good road riding up here, so just having more circuits and more roads to ride on has really helped me improve my endurance.” This year Ellesse has been crowned a world junior track champion and at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Road Racing Championships she won a bunch of individual and team titles with the St Peter’s U20 Girls team. In July she travelled to Switzerland with the New Zealand team at the UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships and came away with a bronze medal in the 2000m individual pursuit and a gold medal in the women's team sprint with teammate Emma Cumming. She also set personal bests in the 2000m individual pursuit and also in the 500m time trial [finishing fifth].” Ellesse and Emma were second fastest in qualifying in 28.304s for the two laps of the smaller 200m track, to be only 2/100ths of a second behind the Italians. They were outstanding in the final with a 16.428s opening lap from the standing start led by Emma which gained a slight lead, with Ellesse storming home in 11.578s for the win by nearly 0.4 seconds. “It was a 200m track, compared to the normal 250m, so it was hard to tell if our ride there was a personal best. But we would’ve – if it had been that would’ve been a personal best too.” Ellesse finished third behind Russian winner Maria Novolodskaya and Australian runner-up Jade Haines in the 2000m individual pursuit, beating Polish rider Nikola Rózynska in the bronze medal in a time of 2.22.695 minutes. New Zealand teammate Nicole Shields from Dunstan High School finished fifth. “The junior worlds were such a great experience, just the whole buzz of racing everyone from around the world and travelling with the team to a big competition like that made it really fun – which hopefully I’ll be doing more of in the future. “Emma Cumming is from Invercargill [formerly Southland GHS] and she and I have been racing for a couple of years now. Looking back at my first nationals, I rode team sprint with her as well and it’s just cool looking at how far we’ve come from the early days in the U17 age-group and now what we’ve achieved together.” Returning to New Zealand, Ellesse joined her St Peter’s School teammates at the New Zealand Secondary School Road Cycling Championships in Levin and struck both individual and team success. She won the U20 Girls Road Race, ahead of Nicole Shields in second and Emma Smith from Villa Maria College in third. She won the U20 Girls Points Race ahead of Georgia Danford from St Cuthbert’s College in second and Nicole Shields in third. The St Peter’s U20 girls team won the team time trial, with Palmerston North Girls’ High School second and Waikato Diocesan School For Girls third, and they finished third in the team points race behind Waikato Dio and Epsom Girls’ Grammar School. The other cyclists in the St Peter’s U20 team were Holly Blakely (captain), Rose Dillon, Ally Wollaston, Jess Clarke and Sammi Ogle. “That was my first school’s nationals and I loved it,” said Ellesse, “I wasn’t sure what the racing or the course would be like, but I really enjoyed it and our team did really well.” What’s coming up next? “My next big race is the Oceania Games in Melbourne in December. After that there are nationals again in February, where I’ll be aiming to qualify the junior world’s team next year too.” The 2017 junior world’s event is in China. Short term, she finishes school for the year in a few days, so is looking forward to the summer away from the classroom and in the saddle. The College Sport Auckland Young Sportsperson of the Year Awards will be held Saturday 26th November 2016, 4.00pm – 6.30pm at Eden Park (North Level 5 Lounge) to recognise outstanding achievement school sport achievement. Auckland Grammar School flanker Sione Havili was awarded the Jerry Collins Memorial Bronze Boot after Saturday’s New Zealand – Australia secondary schools rugby international. The Bronze Boot is selected by team coaches and management for an outstanding performance in this match every year.
Dawn brought much scepticism for the country’s best junior surfers today (Monday 3rd October) as surfers from around the country made their way to the Gisborne coastline for the first day of the 2016 National Scholastic Surfing Championships. What was forecast to be a small if not marginal day of waves turned out to be jam packed with action in perfectly clean 1.0m waves that pulsed through the Makorori Beach line-up. The conditions took all surfers by surprise as each of the eighty competitors in action on day one of the event jumped at the chance to surf with only three others in the water. This week New Zealand’s best junior surfers pull together in teams from twelve regions across the country. Instead of surfing for themselves, they surf as a team. Early indications are that there will be a new title holder at the end of the week with Bay of Plenty’s reign coming to an end after four years at the top. The team title has been won by only four regions in 26 years. Gisborne, Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Coromandel are the only regions to have won the title but it is Taranaki who go in to this year’s event as favourites on paper. It was the youngest of the Taranaki Team that got their campaign off on the right foot. Tom Butland is contesting the Under 14 Boys Division and today posted a 16.4 point heat total to advance to the Quarterfinals. “It is pretty fun out there, so rippable” said the young surfer. “I was so happy when we turned up today and it was three foot, it is awesome” added Butland of the conditions. Being the youngest on any team can be tough but Butland is getting used to holding down that honour for Taranaki. “They are all good boys, I hope we take the win this year, everyone is surfing pretty good and we are all looking forward to the next couple of days.” Also impressing in the Under 14 Boys Division were Maddy Barclay (Otago), Jack Lee (BOP) and Taylor O’Leary (Auck) with good performances in their respective heats. It was a quiet achiever that set the Under 16 Boys Division alight in the first round. Auckland’s Shane Kraus posted the highest heat score of the day – 18.60 out of a possible 20 points “Those rights just started cranking right before the heat so I thought I would hit them and it paid off” said Kraus of his performance. “I have been surfing for the last two weeks straight, two times a day at Piha, it has been pumping, I came down here early to get some practice and that is also paying off. My board is good and the team has been great cheering each other on” he added. Other surfers to impress in the Under 16 Boys Division included Luke Griffin (BOP), Jack McLeod (Otago), Jared Gebert (BOP), Max Brunker (North) and Caleb Cutmore (Wai). Saffi Vette set her home beach on fire in her Under 16 Girls Division heat posting a 14.43 point heat total with a series of powerfully surfed waves on her backhand. Vette is part of the host Gisborne Team who will look to emulate their 2011 triumphs when the claimed their last teams title. Defending Under 16 Girls Division Champion Zhana Hutchieson (Tara) was Vette’s equal as she surfed to a 12.2 point heat total with her own display of powerful surfing to win her heat and advance to the next round. Hutchieson and Vette already look destine to go head to head in the final of the division after only one day of surfing. In the Under 14 Girls Division it was Bay of Plenty surfer Georgia Wederell that shone, the youngest of the team posting a 12.07 point heat total as she powered her way to the final of the division. Ten regional teams from around the country are contesting the event including Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Taranaki, Wellington, Canterbury and Otago. Please see below for results from day one of the 2016 National Scholastic Surfing Championships held at Makorori Beach today (Monday 3rd October).
