“This was our third time lucky in a final, after being beaten finalists in both 2013 and 2014,” Year 11 St Kent’s student Tori told College Sport Media. “We wanted to do well, for the coaches, supporters and the school. We not only wanted to make history but also create good memories” Tori was in previous St Kent’s teams that had lost finals to Mount Albert Grammar School in 2013 and to Rangitoto College in 2014. So it was with joy on Sunday when they overcame poor weather and slippery conditions to beat Southland Girls’ High School 7-2 in the semi-final and then Hamilton Girls’ High School 4-3 in this year’s final. “I’m very proud of the girls and how we played in the finals. We stuck to our game-plan which was to drive hard and defend strong. We have speed and girls who can chuck a long ball so we wanted to utilise both these things. The younger players in our team all stepped up and did their jobs well. “We played against Hamilton Girls’ High School in a pool game the day before and lost to them, so we went into the final knowing what we had to do to beat them.” They made a fast start to the final. “We knew we had to start well, which we did by scoring two really good tries. At halftime we knew we had to come out stronger, especially on defence.” Tori added that every match was tough. “Every game we played was like a final. The calibre of girls touch at this tournament has definitely got stronger.” She said her that the preparations for winning the national title started back in February. “That’s when we set our goals for this. We also won the Auckland regionals in March for the first time. Once winter codes finished for the year we got straight into it. The two fitness trainings and two field trainings we had each per week paid off.” Tori, her younger sister Jamie, Lisa Putt (both Year 9s), Mererangi Paul and Sydney Fraser (both Year 12s) were all named in the tournament team after the final. As well as that, Tori, Sydney and Mererangi have made the New Zealand Open Women’s Touch training squad, to be selected for the Touch Blacks. They have a training camp in early January and from there a squad of 16 gets selected for the team to play in the Trans-Tasman series in Auckland in April. For several girls in the national champion St Kent’s team, Touch isn’t their only sport at an elite school level. Tori, Mererangi, Sydney and Touch captain Christina Oscar were all in the Premier netball team that was defeated 35-41 at the National Secondary School Netball Championships in Ashburton in October. Tori, whose main position is wing defence, also made the Auckland U17 and the Auckland Maori U19 netball teams this year. She’s also good at athletics, but joked that she has “retired”, adding that it’s too time consuming. “Athletics kind of clashes with the touch and netball so I have put it on hold at the moment.” Her main event is the 200m and the 400m. In 2013, aged 13, she finished sixth at the New Zealand U18 400m Championships. Touch teammate Lisa Putt recently won the Junior Girls’ Triple Jump title at the NZ Secondary School Athletics Championships in Timaru. Tori is off school at the moment enjoying her summer break, recharging her batteries for another big sporting year in 2016, which all starts in early January with the Counties Manukau U17 Touch team and the Touch Blacks training squad camp. The 2015 SAS Touch Secondary Schools Girls Tournament Team is: Abbey Johnston (St Hilda’s Collegiate), Ariana Ieremia (Hamilton Girls’ High School), Hope Fraser (Hamilton Girls High School), Kiana Beattie (Hamilton Girls High High), Jamie Kolose (St Kentigern College), Krystal Leger-Walker (St Peter’s Cambridge), Lisa Putt (St Kentigern College), Mererangi Paul (St Kentigern College), Moanekah Vo’ai (Mount Albert Grammar School), Patricia Hopecroft (Southland Girls’ High School), Sydney Fraser St (Kentigern College), Teniaka Willison (Hamilton Girls’ High School), Tori Kolose (St Kentigern College), Victoria Pone (Mount Albert Grammar School), Violet Hape Wise( Hamilton Girls’ High School), Jazmin Hotham (Hamilton Girls’ High School). The votes are in and with thousands having their say, these are our Champions for 2015.... Outstanding athletes in their own right and we look forward to watching their development and future sporting success. Roll on 2016! He explains his role is to create play and control his troops. “My role is to talk a lot, get angry and try and motivate the boys. I have been in the team for four years. I am one of the seniors and I guess the players respect me,” he says. Prior to the semi-finals of the National Championships in Auckland, Rotorua required a riot act reading. The defending champions, after breezing through pool play, nearly tumbled out before the semi-finals. They got casual and they got humbled by Palmerston North Boys’ High School. “We got through to the semis on a count back, us and Hastings, Palmy missed out. The Palmy loss was the best thing for us. It forced us to switch on,” Sargent admits. In the semi-finals Rotorua demolished Westlake Boys’ High School 12-3. Sargent has been a member of Rotorua’s premier side for four years and he believes it’s the best performance he has been a part of. “It was amazing, everything went right, it was like playing the perfect game of touch. Westlake was a really good side,” he acclaims. Hamilton Boys’ High School are a really good side. The perennial contenders were Rotorua’s opposition in the final, as they were in 2014. The decider was a typically tight tussle. “It was a mean game. It was real hard to get points. Hamilton are a sharp side,” Sargent says. Rotorua scored the opening two tries and was never headed, eventually prevailing 4-2. Ngarohi McGarvey-Black, Joshua Taylor and Sargent all made the tournament team, the former was named player of the tournament. “It was an awesome weekend. I was speechless to win a second national title and then make the tournament team,” Sargent says. Sargent singles out McGarvey-Black for particular praise. “Ngarohi is a big time player for us. He is in the Touch Blacks. He got a bit of stick about his age because of the rugby thing, but he is too good.” Sargent has played rep touch for the Bay of Plenty senior team. Additionally he is a standoff in league and halfback in Union. He hopes to travel to Japan with the Rotorua First XV in 2016. Rotorua BHS: National Touch Champions Results Round Robin: St Pats Silverstream, 11-2 Round Robin: Whangarei BHS, 6-4 Round Robin: Trident High School, 10-1 Round Robin Crossover: Palmerston North BHS, 4-6 Round Robin Crossover: Hastings BHS, 6-3 Semi-Final: Westlake BHS, 12-3 Final: Hamilton BHS, 4-2 Twelve secondary school teams from throughout New Zealand descend on the Hillary Outdoors base Great Barrier Island next week for the 2015 National Get2Go Challenge junior adventure racing Grand Final.
The schools come together for the week-long Grand Final having each won one of the 12 one-day regional events held earlier in the year. Some 1600 Year 9 and 10 students took part in the regional qualifiers and 96 will be in action on Great Barrier Island, in mixed boys and girls teams. The finalists by region are: Northland: Whangarei BHS/Whangarei GHS [composite boys and girls team] Waitakere/North Harbour: Takapuna Grammar School Waikato: Hillcrest High School Auckland/Counties Manukau: Botany Downs Secondary College Taranaki: Francis Douglas Memorial College/Sacred Heart College [composite boys and girl team] Hawke’s Bay: Taradale High School Wellington/Wairarapa: Onslow College Manawatu/Wanganui: Wanganui High School Bay of Plenty: Trident High School Canterbury: Cashmere High School Otago/Southland/Southern Aoraki: Mount Aspiring College Nelson/Tasman/Marlborough: Waimea College The Grand Final is a week of outdoor skills based challenges, on both land and water. Sailing, kayaking, rock climbing, navigation, an overnight expedition, problem solving challenges, raft building, survival skills are all part of the action in the final. Hillary Outdoors Events Manager Darren Ashmore said everything is in place for a great week of competition. “This is without a doubt the toughest sporting competition for junior secondary school students in New Zealand. All 12 teams have proven that they deserve to be here and this is their chance to see how they go against each other. The team who has prepared the best and performs the strongest as a team will be the one on top of the scoreboard at the end of the five days. “As individuals the experience will be life changing and they will make some great friends along the way. They will come out the other end more resilient and with a greater sense of their own personal capabilities.” Whakatane’s Trident High School is the defending champion and their new-look team from last year is looking forward to this year’s final. “The team has been training hard around the hills of Whakatane and on the local river and harbour,” said team spokesperson Helen Dobbin. “The Trident team is made up of six year 10 students and two year 9s. This is a completely new team that is going to the island, no repeat students from the team that won from last year. The team looks strong in training but as always the competition will be tough once the event starts.” “Excitement is brewing with the last few things to organise and then we leave on Saturday to head to Auckland. Just spending the night in downtown Auckland is an exciting venture for the team as many haven’t spent any time in the centre city.” Wanaka’s Mount Aspiring College is competing in the Grand Final for the first time, after winning the Otago/Southland regional event. Mount Aspiring College’s Sports Co-ordinator Jacky Toepfer said their team also can’t wait. “Our team of six year 10 and two year 9 students are very excited. They have spent the past two months fundraising, training and sharpening up their orienteering skills. “In the past few years, adventure racing and multisport has grown in popularity at Mount Aspiring College. This can be attributed to increased opportunities to take part in local and regional events, some top-class coaches in various disciplines, and a quality outdoor pursuits programme at the school. With hundreds of kilometres of trails and a lake at our doorstep, it's hard not to enjoy the outdoors! “While this is the first year that Mount Aspiring College has entered a team in Get2Go, the fact that they won the Otago-Southland regional challenge reflects the strength of the team. Most of the team compete regularly in triathlon, athletics, mountain biking and/or orienteering events. “Teamwork will be a big part of the challenge and the team is confident they can work well together to make the right decisions. The results will depend on many things, but we are confident that the team is as ready as they'll ever be for the event.” What: Get2Go Challenge National Grand Final Where: Great Barrier Island (hosted by Hillary Outdoors) When: Over six days from 6-11 December Who: Twelve teams of eight mixed years 9 and 10 boys and girls represented school (including two composite single sex finalists) Qualification: Finalists chosen from winning one of 12 regional qualifying events around the country earlier this year.
